How To Put Honey In Tea

  • 3 min read

For many Americans, making their morning cup of coffee is a sacred ritual. The same can be said for tea drinkers. There is a zen-like quality to the process involved in brewing a cup of tea. For the tea connoisseur having the right kettle, teapot, and cup to drink from are vitally important to brewing the perfect cup of tea. Sound familiar?

Part of making a delicious cup of tea is the art of sweetening it. If you’ve shied away from drinking tea because of its bitter taste and are wondering how to sweeten tea using honey, read on.

For the impatient tea drinkers out there (myself included) wondering, when can I add honey to my tea? Once you’ve steeped the tea in your pot or mug for at least three minutes and removed the bag, you are free to add your honey.

I’m going to provide two methods for brewing tea. One involves a number of kitchen utensils and accoutrements, I call this the ‘Traditional’ tea brewing method. The second set of instructions is for the less encumbered cook who can’t be bothered with such niceties (ahem, that would be me). Use whichever method is readily available in your kitchen, or try both and discover which style best suits your tea drinking.

Traditional Tea

What You’ll Need

  • Kettle
  • Teapot
  • 2 tea bags
  • Porcelain cup
  • Honey
  • Teaspoon (no pun intended. also, any spoon in your kitchen will work, but I do recommend starting with a teaspoon for ease of measurability)
  • Tongs
  • Milk (optional)

1. Run cold water from your tap into a kettle. Bring the water to a boil.

2. Pour the boiling water into your teapot. Place two tea bags into the teapot and close the lid.

3. Allow the tea to steep for three minutes.

4. Carefully remove the bags from the teapot using tongs. Pour the tea into a porcelain cup.

5. Add a teaspoon of honey. Stir well.

6. Sip at your preferred temperature.

A Simple Cup of Tea

The following are directions for using the microwave to make a cup of tea. Please be aware that some manufacturers of tea place staples in their tea bags. Never put metal of any kind into your microwave. If your tea has staples, you will want to remove them before following the instructions provided.

What You’ll Need

  • Water
  • Your favorite tea mug
  • 1 tea bag
  • Honey
  • Teaspoon
  • Milk (optional)

1. Pour cold water from the tap into your favorite tea mug. Leave two fingers or less of room between the lip of the mug and the water line. Why? You’ll need room for the tea bag, milk (optional) and honey.

2. Gently place your tea bag inside the mug. Leave the tea bag string draped on the outside of your mug for easy removal. Microwave for 60 seconds.

3. Allow the tea to steep for three minutes. Remove the tea bag.

4. Add a teaspoon of honey to your tea. Stir well.

5. Sip at your preferred temperature.

Add additional honey to your tea until it reaches the right sweet spot for your tastebuds.

Tea Tip: Also, if during the microwaving process you lose the tea bag string into your cup you can use your teaspoon to retrieve and remove the tea bag. Or, you can use the traditional method I mentioned above and remove the tea bag using tongs.

If you like your tea a bit smoother and creamier, go ahead and add some milk.

Now you know how to put honey in your tea. Sweet! (pun intended)
